Earth have had three major Geologic eras of Phanerozoic time and Mesozoic era is the second in sequence and covers 10% of the geologic history of the planet. The name “Mesozoic” had been derived from Greek words which mean “Middle Life”. With the end of Palezoic era or the “Great dying” Mesozoic era came into existence. Palezoic era is termed as “Great dying” because it took 30 million years into Mesozoic for life to recover on land; recovery of life in the sea was much faster though. The end of Palezoic was the largest mass extinction that earth has faced so far and the event is termed as Permian – Triassic extinction event.
Mesozoic era started 252.2 million years ago and concluded 66 million years ago. Mesozoic era is divided into three major parts which are: Triassic period (251-199.6 million years ago), Jurassic period (199.6-145.5 million years ago) and Cretaceous period (145.5-65.5 million years ago). At the start of the Mesozoic era, the only landmass on the planet was the supercontinent of Pangea, climate was warm, no polar caps and mean sea level was high. Mesozoic era saw a massive expansion of life forms after the Permian – Triassic extinction event. Different types of life forms thrived during each period; in Triassic period earth was inhabited by reptiles and first evolving dinosaurs, Jurassic period rise of birds, dinosaurs and mammals and Cretaceous period was time when dinosaurs were at their prime and had some iconic dinosaurs like Triceratops and Pteranodon (Cotf.edu, 2015).
Mesozoic era came to an end around 65 million years ago when an asteroid hit into earth and created a giant crater at Chicxulub, yucatan Peninsula and massive volcanic eruptions added onto it. With the end of Mesozoic era, almost 50% of the species got extinct which includes all non-avian dinosaurs of that era.
