The purpose of the research is to identify the issues for a local branch of Citibank. The choice of bank was based on the fact that Citibank has both local and international branches. Given this context it will be easier to draw data from different angles. Citibank is a worldwide bank, and this research will attempt to identify the problems for the Citibank, N.A. Shenzhen branch, and compare with the other countries then find its solutions and make recommendations. The research will also attempt to conduct a more specific analysis of the customer management system and the accounting management system that has been employed in Citibank in Shenzhen and compare it against the more general rules and regulations that Citibank follows internationally. A critical discussion will also be conducted based on how other international banks fare.
The research attempts to identify the elements in a universal framework onto a specific case scenario. Here different Citibank branches (at least 3) will be selected from across the world, other than China. These branches are studied using secondary and primary research for their ways of working. The success elements and identified and based on the case study analysis of Shenzhen branch, recommendations are made. The significance of this research is that the international business findings are taken and made applicable to a local situational context. Also the study presents how international business awareness would be helpful in solving key problems for the business in localized context. In analyzing specifically into customer management system, the study will also be able to make culture based recommendations for improvement of the system.
The research is however limited in scope because the concerns of the particular branch-the Shenzhen branch is identified through primary research, but a broader issue set can be derived only by using the macro environmental issues, which means issues for all Citi branches in China might have to be considered. This is reported as a research limitation here because although the research focuses on the Shenzhen branch, the general issues will be considered also, to make the discussions holistic, but in doing so the very purpose of choosing one branch and working with it as a case study might be lost. Secondly the research is also limited in that primary research data might not be collected that easily. There could be obstacles in data collection, as banks are usually sensitive about who their employees talk to.
