I belong to the ethnic and the racial minority groups that have been struggling for opportunity and equal access. This has been particularly true during the economic downturns. My race is the one that have been prejudiced against, for which; I find it harder to get a house or a well paid job. This is attitudinal as well as institutional racism, which is testimony to the fact. Over the recent years, my father who belongs to the racial minority group has made some gains in their status of labor force. But despite such gains, considerable gaps still remain. In all areas of employment, rampant racism still persists. The economic depression is pervading to the ethnic units and exploited races that I belong to. There have some instances, where the colored employees, including Asians like me are hired last and fired first. For this reason, privatization, downsizing, and budget cuts hurt the colored people more. In 1995, the white Americans’ unemployment rate was 4.7 percent, and in contrast, the African American’s unemployment rate was 10.1 percent. Although, I am not an African American, but the brunt of the racism affects me as well. The colored adolescents’ rate of unemployment is around four times that of adolescents belonging to the white community. In America, the most downgraded race is African Americans, although the Hispanics and Asians have much lower income proportionately.

Apart from the obtainment of employment, I also face difficulty to get and keep houses. I have faced it myself several times. The landlords are often found to be racists that don’t prefer renting the houses to the colored people. The problem of rampant racism in the housing discrimination against the colored Americans is sometimes considered as a “national problem”.
Even in the education system, the white students and the white schools are disproportionately more fortunate than their black counterparts. Having books in the class in the schools where mostly colored students study including the Asians, including me, is something of a luxury. Even when, the books brought to the class, they were given to us only to see them quickly. The books are dirty and old, and on the front it is labeled as “for colored”. I often find it dangerous to live in America, because if the kids like us are killed by the white folks, it often translates into no consequences. However, if we retaliate and in the skirmish, any white individual gets killed, it becomes a major local issue with police and judiciary taking the necessary steps against the crime committed.
