Two major socialist theories are explained in reference with higher education. The first discussed theory that is functionalist theory which suggests that class and social status can be uplifted or downed by acquiring knowledge or otherwise. Whereas, the conflict theory suggests that the higher education do not allow lower class to move ahead and make their position in the society, instead the rich remain rich and poor remain poor due to the stratification system practiced in higher education.

If history is filtered in terms of classes, it is observed that the era of primitive communism was the only classless era in the history of human life. Afterwards, man has divided the society in two classes. For example, in ancient society, there were masters and slaves and in feudal society there were lords and serf, while in modern capitalist society there are capitalists and waged class (Metcalf, 1997). Conflict theory is based on the idea of capitalism centered system of education (Langston, 2004). The money revolved in the upper class as they hold top position in organizations and societies. These upper class entities do not give chance to the middle class or lower class to compete with them. For instance, a rich person hires a gardener or driver. He will try all possible means to arrange the gardener or driver at the lowest possible rate of wage. These lowered wages of gardener and driver will never allow them to invest in education or other constructive areas, rather they will be hand to mouth with their wages. Thus, their master and the offspring of master will always enjoy the benefit of their social position when the worker class is struggling to fulfill their basic needs. According to conflict theory, the upper middle class in higher education system never allows morally, economically and socially to come at the front despite of being talented and skilled.

On the other hand, functionalist theory, as mentioned above, supports merit and hard work in higher education to achieve higher positions in the society. It believes that if the students perform well in their higher education institutions and acquire quality professional education, there is a wide job opportunity in the society for them. A graduate from well-known or less-known high school or university is not ranked in the professional world according to his original class, which is rather than he can avail best job options if he has got merit and skills (Purcell & Hogarth, 1999). Moreover, functionalists also believe in the idea that wealth does not always revolve within the upper class. As a supporting evidence, functionalists forwards examples like Bill Gates, who donated 58% of his total wealth in charity. There are several such examples. Therefore, functionalist theory believes that higher education is based on general consensus on common values, where all individuals work together for collective promotion and wellbeing.
