Several scholars of the phenomenon of entrepreneurship have associated it with several different theories. For example, the Austrian economists, Josef Schumpeter (1883—1950) relates entrepreneurship to innovation. Another Harvard scholar, Arthur Cole (1889—1980) believes entrepreneurship to be a meaningful activity that also leads to the setting up of organisational structure. Similarly, Peter Drucker (1909—2005), a management expert insists that entrepreneurship is an entire discipline in itself. The author also suggests that some extent of entrepreneurship is present in every business entity. He says that it is a study of innovative ideas and diagnostic discipline. On doing systematic study of the possible areas of change, one can find the opportunities for Entrepreneurial Ventures (Drucker, 2014). It is important to recognize entrepreneurship and innovation as a discipline and develop its practice methods and principles, like that was done for the management as a discipline (Drucker, 2014).
Taking the example of GoPro, the work done by Nick Woodman can be related to the principles of entrepreneurial as a discipline. As Drucker says, there is ‘no magic’ involved and there is no overnight success in entrepreneurship. Its success is purely based on the knowledge and hardwork of the entrepreneur. Like any discipline, the entrepreneurship works on certain principles. These are primarily creativity which leads to the development of new ideas and innovation to apply these ideas in the fields of opportunity. Entrepreneurship could be seen as outcome of a methodical and disciplined application of creativity and innovation to available or created opportunities.
Woodman worked very hard and put in lots of efforts to produce exactly what he wanted. Although he was obsessed with the idea of his product, he was never unrealistic. He had given himself three years of time to materialize this camera venture. Woodman has keen view for opportunities and determination to convert them into profits. He learnt from his past failures. As Drucker said that entrepreneurship can be learnt by anyone who pays attention to its principles, we can see that Woodman in a way applied those principles in the success of GoPro. His love for the surfing made him realize the opportunity present in the field of camera. The inclination of people towards capturing their memories inspires him to come up with the idea of GoPro. Then, he puts in a lot of hard work to apply those ideas and makes his prototype. The success of GoPro depended on Woodman’s passion and his ability takes his passion to the point that he can reap benefits out of it.
Hence we can say that Drucker is correct to relate entrepreneurship to a discipline. It can be learned through creative thinking, innovative ideas and their organized application to obtain desired goals.
