Thus the Rational Choice theory is best to explain that’s why a juvenile arsonist commits arson. This is because this theory states that a person works on his logical choices. There is always a logical choice made by the arsonists that under which situation the crime has to be committed. One of the important parts of rational choice theory is the idea that people who commits crime thinks of possible pleasure; they might get instead of possible pain caused due to consequences. This situation is called as Hedonistic Calculus. Thus the introduction of rational choice theory in modern criminology has proved to be valuable (Cornish & Clarke, 2002).

  Different Theoretical Approaches to Explain Behaviour of Juvenile Arsonists

  Different theoretical approaches can help in explaining the behaviour of juvenile arsonists. These approaches can help to explain the major risks connected with juvenile arsonists to set fires. The connection between the individual characteristics and social circumstances of the arsonists has been found (Snyder, 1999). In the process of fire investigations, the following approaches are used. First are Interaction theories (this includes functional theory and dynamic theory), social and environmental theories (this includes rational choice theory, social learning theory and others), time-stable individual differences approach (it includes psychodynamic explanation of purposeful arsonists’ actions, grave psychiatric disorders, different neurophysiologic turmoil) (Cornish & Clarke, 2014).

  All these theories have been studied for a long time and at present they are effectively used in understanding crimes such as fire setting crimes. Example of time-stable individual differences approach can be taken. This approach can help to explain the individual characteristics of the juvenile arsonists, which influenced them to set fire. According to the statics in most cases juvenile arsonists are found to be suffering from “different psychiatric disorders such as the symptoms of schizophrenia, alcoholism, personality disorders” (Siegel, 2010).
