Sociability cannot be measured in absolute terms for any society. Some scholars would gauge it quantitatively with the volume of messages, number of members, friends, contacts etc. Others would adjudge using the metrics of social media platform like number of retweets, likes, comments or whether a piece of content is viral, or the increasing viewer-base of mass media channels. Yet another holistic way of adjudging it would be on the basis of an individual’s identity and networked individualism (Castells, 2005).
Upon observation of the degree, frequency and volume of communication alone in the Network Society, it can be concluded without doubt that new forms of wireless communication have increased the sociability internet users and the younger generation in particular. In addition to the convenience of instant messaging, the internet has also empowered individuals to put their ideas out to the world via personalized channels like blogging, podcasting and streaming (Purser & Hassan 2007). Hence, it would be more than fair to assume that the Network Society has eased out communication at individual and mass levels and has also diversified the various modes of interaction. For the first time, people have the upper hand at selecting and articulating the different communication platforms and personalizing it to their convenience.
