After the global financial crisis the financial regulation importance and its surveillance significance were apparent not only to obtain sound finance institutes but also for stabilizing the finance institutes altogether. Attention has been given in several ways for better identifying, evaluating and mitigating the finance institutes related risks both in the nation and across borders (Eggert et al, 2012). The focus increasingly has been on adopting an approach which is system wide. Such an approach, in Canada is a responsibility taken by 2 departments collaboratively which are the Finance Department and other authorities of finance regulations inclusive of Canadian Bank, OSFI and CDIC (Canada Deposit Insurance Corporation). It is the Financial minister ultimately who has the responsibility to develop appropriate financial institutes with stewardship. The financial regulation and supervision through a shared system has helped the country to gain advantage even when under financial crisis globally. OSFI is responsible to supervise the federally regulated institutes of finances. The CDIC operated the deposit insurance federal system along with the FCAC (that is the financial consumer agency of Canada) works for informing and protecting customers of these institutes. In order to better regulate the system, OSFI implemented the capital regulations based on risk, the Basel III framework. There are various objectives of overarching policies used by Canada as a framework to establish banking sector rules appropriately. Even though the banks in Canada were able to overcome the crisis of 2008 in a better manner but still the challenge that still faces the banking sector are varied(Eggert et al, 2012). The most significant challenge lies in the potentially onerous regulatory changes that keep taking place in the banking environment. However, implementing the Basel III framework requirements across the banking sector might help bring uniformity and stability.
The nature of this research is based on idealizing the different issues faced by Canadian economy in relation to its banking regulations. The research will be inclusive of formalizing the roles of bank in Canada, the roles and responsibilities of OSIF, the CMHC provision (Canadian mortgage and Housing Corporation), Basel III framework explanation and the reason for its adoption along with its implications on Canadian economy.
