Peterborough’s main problem which is quite old now is the above average literacy problems faced by the inhabitants of this city. Every type of survey conducted in the last ten years, irrespective of its size, yielded negative results in terms of literacy level of the population. More surprisingly, more than forty percent of the adult population does not possess the relevant literacy skills required to live a good life (Committee, 2008).
As more and more governmental and other services are transferred to the Internet, literacy is creating even more issues as internet requires the people to read and write if they want to use services over the internet. For example, applying for a driver’s license or employment benefits on internet is extremely difficult for a person who is unable to read a simple sentence. Illiteracy also creates a negative impact on the younger generation as illiterate parents are unable to raise their kids effectively (Gordon, 2012). Adults can only be empowered to bring up their children in a best way possible if they are really good in literacy skills.
