Information search behaviour refers to a process of consumer simulation to activate knowledge from memory or to receive messages from the environment (Engel et al., 1993). In the meantime, Wikie (1994) states that consumer search relevant information regarding product, shop or regarding the knowledge of purchasing. In other words, consumers mitigate the uncertainty and help decision-making by obtaining information and then filling the knowledge. Based on Wikie (1994) and Solomon (2003), information search could be divided into internal search and external search.
Internal information search
Internal search refers to consumer’s tendency to make decision by knowledge of long-term memory. If knowledge of long-term memory lacks, consumer would seek out external information.
External information search
External Information search refers to the situation when consumer obtains information from life resource such as friends, newspaper and press. The assumption in this case is that the consumers are rational.
If consumers could not make decision by internal search, they would turn to external search. Either internal information search or external information search is affected by individuals or the environment. Bouazza (1989) describes information search behaviour as a solution, in order to satisfy individual information demand. In addition, Srinivasan and Ratchford (1991) list several variables which would affect information search.
Environment variable: difficulty of decision-making, quantity of backup project and complexity of project.
Situation variable: satisfaction experience, time limit, cognition of risk.
Consumer characteristics: education, knowledge of product, involvement.
