Miyazaki narrates to his audience through both visual and aural means and in the cases is seen to present characters with a sense of ominous feeling. The music that accompanies No Face is quite scary even; there is a sense of something hollow that the audience feels on listening to the music. This view of Caniva is somewhat justified in the music background. However in the context of another movie-My Neighbor Totoro, this view would be challenged, with respect to the musical background. In this movie it is seen that 10-year-old Satsuki and 4-year-old Mei are living with their father as their mother is recovering in a sanatorium. Apart from the time the girls spend with their father who is a Professor, they explore the natural surroundings. The girls discover Totoro a big cat like creature that is hidden in the forest. The father daughter relationships and the relationship of the girls with Totoro are all captured beautifully. The background music here is a combination of an energetic music, nostalgia and the silence in the music movie clips where the girls are having fun with their father. They get into the tub to have a shower, they are talkative, they run around the house and in all this the background music is infused well with the energy of the girls. The music also weaves in a thread of nostalgia, especially in the movie sections where the girls are having fun alone. Tze-Yue and Hu present that the Miyazaki’s movies have a way of presenting the things that are past (Tze-Yue and Hu). The background music that is livelier in these sections of the movie indeed transports the viewer to their own childhood, the time of carefree days.
