Children have to spend longer time in the school buses than the guidelines provided by the state. According to the guidelines, children should not spend more than “30 minutes one way, middle school students 45 minutes, and high school students 1 hour”(Spence 4). The children are too tired to perform well at the school due to such bus rides, and also they are not able to fully participate in school activities. No economic value has been placed on the time of children, and their time is considered to be the topic of debate in the long bus rides, quality of education and school closures. According to the study of Ramage and Howley, the consolidated schools were very attractive for the people living in rural areas. This is because these people believed that such school will provide them with the opportunity to have better living standards and will also broaden the educational opportunities for their children (Ramage and Howley 15).

The problem faced by the children in Ontario is that families living in the rural communities are divided in catholic and non-Catholic families (Howley 12). The Ontario students have to attend the schools with low enrollments. Such schools are not able to support the enhanced educational program due to less number of children. The reason due to which these schools are not able to achieve the critical mass is because the children in communities are divided under catholic and non-Catholic. The study of Zars (3) stated that “busing could be considered as the exploitation of the children’s time, and he students with large average times on the buses, report lower grades, poorer levels of fitness, fewer social activities, and also poor study habits”. This explains that there is a very urgent requirement of addressing these issues.
