During the 15th and 16th century, there was a steady improvement in the military tactics and the number of warriors in the army increased up to hundreds of thousands. Eventually, a law was passed according to which only the samurai were allowed to carry weapon. By this rule, social mobility came to an end and the samurai rule was firmly established. However, as a result of their high position in society and also for the lack of warfare in Japan, the samurai slowly became courtiers and bureaucrats instead of being warriors.

They became more of a status symbol instead of being a weapon used in warfare. In 1853, the Japanese isolation was penetrated by the naval steamships of the US. The Japanese ports were opened for foreign ships and they started to take part in western trade. The right of the samurais to be the only force allowed to carry weapons was revoked by Emperor Meiji in 1873 and he also revoked the right of the samurai’s to wear katana sword in public and to execute the people who were disrespectful to them. In this way, the decline and eventually the abolishment of samurai started. Similarly, their ability to hold a place in government was also denied and the military of Japan also started to be organized in Western-style.

  Conclusion

However, even if the samurai warriors are no longer present today, the driving force behind them can still be felt in the Japanese society. The story of samurai will remain a part of the Japanese culture and it will be considered as a force that has honour and courage as well as nobility and strength.
