HIV &AIDS (Human immunodeficiency virus infection and acquired immune deficiency syndrome) was first diagnosed in 1981 and classified as a highly infectious disease by the CDC. At that time the disease was very new and little information was available regarding the same. However as research in the disease was started, gradually its nature and modes of spread began being understood. The human immunodeficiency virus, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV) is spread through unprotected sex, blood transmission, through the use of infected Hypodermic needles and from mother to child during pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding (Stolley & Glass, 2009). The disease developed into being a social stigma on its discovery and remains stigmatized till the turn of the millennium.
Transmission of the disease was not determined and understood which triggered the public to avoiding HIV patients which placed additional pressure on their health. Today proper care, support and management of HIV and AIDS patients helps reduce stress, which is a major element linked to destroying the infected person immunity. As long as the immunity is maintained at a higher level, the person can live a normal life. Awareness regarding HIV and AIDS is now growing across the globe. Today the disease is not classified as lethal as it used to in the past but this also result in the public overlooking the risks associated to contracting the disease.
