Throughout the film, the queen Ravenna is portrayed to be as obsessive, cruel, resentful, arrogant, selfish, cowardly, extremely vain, power-hungry and egomaniacal. The only obsession of hers was to maintain her immortality and beauty, and in order to achieve her aims she went to great lengths. Regardless of her great age, few of the personality features which she had were – overreaction to a bad news and extreme emotional outbursts – are regarded to be childlike in nature. She is able to seduce many men and hence could be considered as highly charming and manipulative; she is able to seduce even the king; the manner in which she does the same is either by promising them the things which they need or with her beauty so as to get her own power. Through fear and violence she is able to maintain her power and is also able to suppress rebellion. She believes in the fact that as compared to the other kings she is a kinder ruler also believes in the fact that the world is deserved to be treated in such manner. Moreover, what is thinks is that so that Snow white shouldn’t experience growing old, she believes that by killing her when she is young she is doing her a mercy (Hanlon, 2012). Hence, it could be implied from this is the fact that is delusional. It is from her harsh early life that much of the bitterness and anger of Ravenna towards the world is stemmed from.
Ravenna does appear to be capable of affection and love, regardless of her generally brutal and callous treatment of others. She is devastated when her brother Finn dies whom she loves a lot. But, it should be taken into consideration that so as to save herself she sacrifices Finn. This put an emphasis on the fact that she would always put herself first even when it comes to her loved ones. She doesn’t forgive any kind of failure quite easily and she seems to have anger issues. As the movie progresses she becomes increasingly paranoid and deranged and it is at that tome Snow White continues to avoid her. Ravenna tends to underestimate Snow White; at the same time she is regarded as somewhat arrogant. She also underestimates the power courage and love possesses. What she fails to understand is the significance of inner beauty has as compared to the physical beauty. The only thing she fears the most is growing old and death.
