History of Japan is majorly influenced by Confucian ideals, like Korean and Chinese history. Confucian society was based on family system. In Confucian society, men were supposed to head and financially support the family, while women were supposed to do household chores, marry, and give birth to heirs. Women were greatly dependent on men for their necessities, food, and other essentials. In Confucian inspired Japanese history, marriages were arranged by elders of the family, parents, grandparents or guardians. It is found that, family linage possess more importance than marriage. So, if woman fails to give birth to heirs, she returns to her parents or guardian’s home. They used to live in a joint family system. Usually three consecutive generations dwell under one roof. Women could own not property (Friedman, 1992).
The inspiration from Confucian society started to get dismal gradually. The major change in the status of women in Japan occurred after World War II. The set of laws regarding family structure and values, and position and rights of women were revised by Japanese Constitution in 1946. As a result Civil Code of 1947 proved to be a great tool in removing barriers faced by women in Confucian inspired Japanese history. Right to vote, right to get marry and divorce, right to own property, parental rights along with other rights were granted to women. In spite of numerous legal rights, women were still expected to look after household and men to be the head and financial supporter of the family (Sato, 1987; Saito, 2007).
Barriers Faced by Women at Workplace
Regardless of economic, financial and educational advancements in Japan, women of Japan face a lot of complications in initiating and advancing their career. At initial stage, they face back-wrenching difficulties in getting an appropriate job.
