The Farmer who was also a mentor of Deo was able to gather a group of NGO’s that were providing electricity through solar power, a generator, fuel and computers with a satellite system so that the records of the clinic can be maintained effectively. Negotiations were also performed by the farmer with health authorities of international and national levels for supply of inexpensive medicines and other materials required for the clinic which even included the free drugs for HIV and TB. Some friends of the medical school were brought by Deo to his medical clinic from which one went back for running the medical clinic on volunteer basis.
Deo in 1993 was conducting his internship in Mutaho after completing his three year medical school. Suddenly one day a man came to his clinic for taking away his seriously ill brother. When Deo confronted them they told him that he should also leave that place otherwise he will also die. Soon after this encounter Deo realized that a hotel was taken over by the pandemonium (Kidder, 2009). Deo hid himself and no one founded him while the building was stormed by the armed men. Later Deo realized that the news of armed spread everywhere and almost all the people in the hospital left it including Hutu and Tutsi and it was suspected that the attackers were the militants.
Deo made his escape through fields and forests and finally headed towards a small church in the nearby town. While he was travelling for his escape he just found empty houses with piled dead bodies. In the mid way he passed through the school of his cousin Genevieve but found that it was also burning. Deo planned to move back to Bujumbura but due to continuous encounters with militiamen he was forced to head his way towards the border at Rwanda. Deo there found groups of refugees that mainly consist of Hutus which were also moving towards north Rwanda. A Hutu woman helped Deo in his escaped that pretended to be as his mother. The mere crossing the border does not guarantee safety of life at the refugee camps as recruitment of Hutu militias was going on there so many innocent people were killed by the Rwandan soldiers in suspicion of being militants or Tutsis.
